Tournament Fundraising Page - DONATE HERE!
The Shuley Nakamura Charitable Foundation has partnered with a great local organization in Doc Wayne for the 2023 Shuley Cup. ALL funds raised through our turnament & player fundraising pages (see link above) will be donated directly to Doc Wayne.
Over 20% of Massachusetts youth experience anxiety or depression and over a third of Massachusetts youth experienced at least one form of trauma, abuse, or significant stress in the past year. To help support our youth in this time of greatest need, Doc Wayne provides group and individual therapy in the Boston area, using sports as a vehicle for therapy to increase attendance and help youth connect to professionals who can help them. At Doc Wayne, therapists are called "coaches" and our office is a school gymnasium. We use a basketball, a soccer ball, or other sports to get kids to show up to therapy and learn valuable mental health lessons using the power of sports.
Right now, Doc Wayne is trying to expand its individual therapy program, which is currently reaching 85 youth each week. Due to staffing limitations, we have 23 clients still stuck on our waitlist. Our goal is to have every one of these children off our waitlist and seeing a clinician as soon as possible. For every $600 we raise, we can deliver a month of therapy to one of our kids and get them off the waitlist. While untreated mental illness can drastically decrease lifespans, even a few sessions with a therapist can lower the risk of suicide among at-risk patients (Johns Hopkins). Let's not wait another moment to give our kids the help they need. Let's clear the waitlist and strengthen youth mental health together.
